Coalition for Democratic Nanaimo is a group of neighbourhood and community organizations sponsoring a broadly-based discussion of important issues facing Nanaimo. The discussion will help identify issues and provides a forum for voters to raise questions and for candidates to respond prior to the Nov. 19 municipal election.
+ creating a vision for the city and region through a consultative process with our citizens;
+ using that vision to manage and expand economic development of our community and the region in a reasoned, sustainable way;
+ acknowledging that social development and economic development are two sides of the same coin, they are dependent one upon the other;
+ recognizing our considerable assets and putting them together to make a vibrant prosperous community and region; and
+ building relationships among council and with staff; encouraging community and regional discourse; and finding ways to make reasoned decisions that move the city towards a sustainable and prosperous future that serves the interests of citizens and the community.
For me one of the biggest issues is communication between City and Citizen.
As a outspoken proponent of Nanaimo's Response too Homelessness Action Plan, http://www.nanaimo.ca/assets/Departments/Community~Planning/Social~Planning/Nanaimos~Response~to~Homelessness~Action~Plan/080707_Nan_Strategy.pdf and of the housing being proposed through this plan I have often stated that communication of the process has been lacking.
Another example would be the recent approval of borrowing $22million for the proposed $65million Water Treatment Plant. Only one Public Open House was held.
COMMUNICATION BETWEEN CITY & CITIZEN MUST BE IMPROVED!
I agree with Diane in regards to "acknowledging that social development and economic development are two sides of the same coin, they are dependent one upon the other." The kicker is how we implement this so that it benefits everyone, not just a few.
We have much to be proud of in our beautiful City. Our natural surroundings, the wonderful people, our vibrant community organizations, our sports teams, our schools, our University.We can be so much better. We need to work together as a community and build on our community planning, so that we have a vision for Nanaimo that leads us into a sustainable, healthy future. A vision the whole community can be a part of.
Some of my priorities will be : •Open collaborative leadership encouraging community participation •To focus on long-term sustainability in economic, environmental and social development. •To protect and preserve municipal public services e.g. public water, public transportation •To be a steward for our recreational parks and parklands •Affordable Housing A vision for Nanaimo that is inclusive, healthy, green and welcoming. A community vision that respects people and neighbourhoods, preserves the environment and bases change on community participation. Let us work together on our vision, and build a brighter future for Nanaimo.
I am eager to participate in the discussions leading up to the important November 10th event. Some of my platform planks are: *Economic Development. *Continued Neighbourhood Planning. *Nanaimo’s ambitious Housing First initiative. *Food Security and Urban Agriculture. *An overdue Asset Management Plan to deal with Nanaimo’s looming infrastructure deficit. Please visit www.fredpattje.ca and www.facebook.com/VoteFredPattje for more information
I believe that our city needs to have strong leadership, more community involvement and a collective vision that everyone in our city can be proud of.
My platform consists of:
1.Community building, making sure we have involve people in our community to make it a city with high regards for the arts, business and citizen involvement. We also need councilors who are willing listen and respond to people within the community.
2. Business Growth and Migration, making sure we have a strong business community and make sure that we have a strong economy that provides jobs
3.Sustainability: Revitalization of our downtown, and making sure that we support an efficient and convenient transit system
4.Fiscal Accountability- Making sure tax payers money is spent appropriately, especially when committing to large project, and the implementation of a diverse tax base to help keep taxes at a manageable level
Yes communication. Like appointing a corporation and giving them millions of dollars on open budgets to do your job as mayor.? Or doubling our water bill so we can fix our water problem. There is no water problem. The ph is perfect and so it the mineral content. Doubling the water bill!!! Taxes, taxes taxes. Im the only one who is going to stop the taxes and get communication going between the resident and the council. I call it control, as I have seen over spending and millions of our tax dollars wasted only to be taxes some more. There is no retirement with taxes, no low rents with taxes, and especially no easy living with tax hikes each year. Lets cut some government wages and get some jobs flowing. This webpage will control this councils spending and money funnels, no bids on contracts etc. They will not spend a cent without our knowing and vote. I will use the resources we have for projects and do my best to keep things in the business sector so we keep below budget and a simple government agenda. There is lots of money here, lets stop giving it away to bogus contractor deals and open budgets to newly assigned corporation. This is happening and we are being robbed. I will make sure it stops when I am in that chair . I will put a secure system in place that will stop this regardless of who is mayor or council. NO MORE TAXES, no more fraud. Hello communication! I cant believe they stole my platform on legalize for secondary education. Imagine how much they will take from that and ad to their wages. If you dont want a 8% tax hike and water bills doubling, or another raise of 24%. Please, let me at em. I will change all this for the good . We will have a sustainable and profitable community. I will lower taxes and we will have busy businesses and investors, tourists and lots of fun. To a happy and clean city. cheers. People will invest in an area with a tax freeze or lower taxes. So will business. And we can enjoy our homes even if they are worth a million. The property taxes will not go up with the price of your home. Things have to be sustainable.
In brief here are some of the most important issues I believe we are facing in Nanaimo.
* Low Barrier Housing and how we can encourage the acceptance by community neighbours? * High Unemployment and how we may address this issue * How do we improve the local economy * How to make Nanaimo more business friendly * How do we improve customer service at city hall * How do we control growth and contain within designated areas * How do we support economic development and promote regional cooperation? * How do we support farming and food production? * How do we co-ordinate land use planning with transportation transportation? How do we reduce energy consumption? * How do we encourage and provide affordable housing * How do we encourage and establish education and communication programs that help realize sustainable objectives between all our partners? * How do we prepare for climate change?
There are many issues but perhaps these are some that I feel are first and foremost.
I believe Nanaimo has the potential to become one of the leading small cities in BC with a strong economy and a rich community spirit that supports all its citizens and celebrates its diversity. We've been missing the leadership, direction and vision that can make this happen. Here are five areas where I would focus to make positive change happen quickly in the community: - A commitment to ZERO property tax increase within 3 years. - Reconsider ‘wet housing’ plans. Engage in real community consultation. - Get city hall and the community working as a team. - Aggressively market Nanaimo as a business destination. - Provide strong leadership to reflect the community’s vision. There needs to be a new approach to increase the effectiveness of partnerships between the City and stakeholders like Vancouver Island University, Nanaimo Port Authority, Vancouver Island Health Authority, Snuneymuxw First Nations, major employers and industry, senior levels of government and non-government organizations in efforts to market ourselves to the world. We must take advantage of our assets, seek opportunities to expand them, position ourselves to invite and welcome new business, facilitate a healthy local economy with fair taxes, and focus on making city hall ‘business friendly’ with a level playing field for all. We will create greater strength as a community by coming together and rebuilding trust between residents, elected leaders and the skilled people running the $160 million corporation called the City of Nanaimo. The security of residents will always be paramount and I eagerly stand behind our public safety workers while carefully balancing support of our social safety net. Our cultural core – the arts, sports, recreation, festivals and events – will always be close to the heart of our community and will flourish with a strengthened economy. Care for our environment, stewardship of our natural resources, and preservation of the qualities that make our setting so spectacular will never be prejudiced in our efforts to achieve a sustainable future for our families. Mayor and Council must reflect the vision of the community – and do so with transparency and trust to make Nanaimo a better place. There needs to be a new attitude around asking for the community's input to major decisions, and a new commitment to serious community consultation. My community is an important part of my conscience. I know we an do better when we work together. This is my passion and these are my promises. Now… Let’s get things done!

In that order please and without skipping that yucky one in the middle.
I am running for Mayor of Nanaimo. I am pleased with the work done by our previous Council & Mayor Ruttan. They gave us an Economic Development Commission and a new City Administrator. I seek to build on this solid foundation with policy initiatives designed to increase the pace and efficiency of council and the city.. BALANCED EFFICIENCY
We have good people and good processes, lets use them, efficiently for the purposes that they are intended. It really is that simple.
For example a big part of the last council meeting was taken up with delegations on a zoning issue in Westwood Lake area. A restaurant wants to open to the public. I went to it last night, checked it out and with what I heard on Monday night am prepared to bring the matter to the process that will render a decision. Yes or No - an answer allows movement. Wondering stops movement, Moving is living. Council's decision Monday night to refer the matter back to staff gives neither the parties or the public a chance to be heard. It burdens staff and further complicates overall city operations. I say get on with it - use the process that is there for this purpose - get to the public hearing, listen, analyze & vote.
Dear people of Nanaimo, sweet international harbor city. Local elections are not only the most democratic, because you actually get to vote for a real person they are the very most important. HERE is where the action gets to happen. Anyone can sprout lovely comprehensive words and still nothing happens. For instance taking the subject of HOMELESSNESS. For fifteen years I have listened to every politician at election time saying how they are going to do this an d that and they belong to special committees ect. Ect. And in all that time there has been nothing accomplished. I know a native lady here in Nanaimo who has been living in the bushes around town for five years. The homeless around town all say “hello Brunie” when they see me because they know I admire their ability to exist in such adverse conditions, not being able to wash or change their underwear. How well would any of us fare? Once again I hear candidates, ex mayors mouthing off on how they are going to build housing for the homeless. This time I did’t even mention the homeless coming to the conclusion that people don’t really care. When I am councillor however, you can coun t on me to get some ACTION going because thats the o nly thing that matters. With the political will the homeless people of our city can be warm and dry within thirty days! All it takes is an empty lot , of which there are many to choose from, some construction trailers , sewer and water, hooked on to hydro and the deed is done!!!!!!!!!!!!! they smile and say hello to me because I made them that promise. My next dedication is affordable HOMEOWNERSHIP. Not housing, homeownership. A piece of the pie. True democracy is equality, Yes? I started in real estate I nVancouver, have worked in Victoria, Parksville area, and specialized on the Islands. There is almost nothing as satisfying as going through your own door, knowing its yours. A place to call HOME is a primary human need. I am well versed in real estate contract law and a capable financier. Perhaps it is because I was in that business that I feel responsible to creating home ownership projects for as many people as possible. By removing the realor and developer profits were’re already have-way home. One third of the world is starving! Yes its true. We don’t quite feel it yet here. We are so lucky. It seems modern civilization is so taken with computer technology that we have forgotten to feed ourselves . A little earthquake and believe it in three days there is NO FOOD IN THE CITY! Growing organic local food to feed everyone, everyone, must become our No one Economic development. There is no development, nothing that is of more importance! We have the very warmest climate in all of Canada, lets get on with it. Not only will everyone be healthier, happier but more money will be left jingling in our pockets. Restaurants and locale food stores can also carry locale produce creating many worthwhile JOPS. GREEN TRANSPORTATION I am without doubt the greenest candidate as I do not own a car and that is why I am able to live within my means on my little seniors pension. My hot rod bike is my primary mode of transportation , helps save the planet and gives me sexy legs at 69. Sometime down the road people will be forced to reconsider the value of the car. I never have to worry about where to park. However sharing the road with cars is like having a death wish because there really is’nt room. A real bus station located downtown would be a real asset, with toilets, refreshments and internet. More locale jobs. MORE LOCALE JOBS can be established by shared vendor spaces in our empty downtown buildings creating a thriving downtown. Artists, craftspeople, there is much talent here. Lets do it
1. Is to keep the momentum going and find long-term solutions to housing, feeding and clothing our homeless - nurturing people back to productive lives; improve the position of working-poor persons and families; and, attack the causal factors of homelessness and poverty. a. I say YES to Housing-First initiatives - I say NO to Wet-house or Hybrid Wet-house facilities b. I believe the Uplands Drive location is a shameful choice of Council; and, grossly inappropriate. That does not mean that there is not a workable north-end location alternative. c. We can do better; Dr. Tsemberis and Dr. Galster both well known subject matter experts in the field have a better way; a proven way – the David Moirs’ of the world deserve better.
2. Transportation is Key to the Socio-Economic success of Nanaimo.
I have noticed a lack of mention regarding First Nations.
Through my work and community involvement I have gotten to know many people of First Nation heritage. I have also built relationships with a number of councilors and the chief of Snuneymuxw First Nation. As one of the poorer of the first nations groups in BC the city of Nanaimo needs to support the Snuneymuxw people in their efforts of seeking redress from Provincial and Federal Governments. Nanaimo needs to continue to cement its relationships with the Snuneymuxw and work towards making this a better community for all.
Thank you to the organizers of this excellent event. I wish we could participate in 3 or 4 of these types of events in any effort to familiarize voters with a candidate's personality, their grasp of the issues, and their ability to communicate and work in a group.
My compliments to the neighbourhood associations and their volunteers.
