Welcome to Coalition for Democratic Nanaimo

This discussion forum leading up to the Nov. 10 all-candidates' meeting and the Nov. 19 municipal election is intended to encourage a dialogue among candidates and citizens.

In this first stage, candidates and citizens are invited to identify what they consider to be the three most important issues facing Nanaimo, and to explain why they consider these issues important.

As the discussion moves along, the themes that appear will help to shape some of the topics for the all-candidates' meeting on Nov. 10.

  1. Good work, lets get people moving. To their keyboards, to their phones, to information, to analysis and especially to decisions. LETS BUILD NANAIMO TOGETHER The top 3 issues I see in Nanaimo are Economic Development, Social Responsibility and Fun. Yes, lets work, do our chores and play. In that order please and without skipping that yucky one in the middle.

I am running for Mayor of Nanaimo. I am pleased with the work done by our previous Council & Mayor Ruttan. They gave us an Economic Development Commission and a new City Administrator. I seek to build on this solid foundation with policy initiatives designed to increase the pace and efficiency of council and the city.. BALANCED EFFICIENCY

We have good people and good processes, lets use them, efficiently for the purposes that they are intended. It really is that simple.

For example a big part of the last council meeting was taken up with delegations on a zoning issue in Westwood Lake area. A restaurant wants to open to the public. I went to it last night, checked it out and with what I heard on Monday night am prepared to bring the matter to the process that will render a decision. Yes or No - an answer allows movement. Wondering stops movement, Moving is living. Council's decision Monday night to refer the matter back to staff gives neither the parties or the public a chance to be heard. It burdens staff and further complicates overall city operations. I say get on with it - use the process that is there for this purpose - get to the public hearing, listen, analyze & vote.

I could go on & will :) your turn.....

What do you want for Nanaimo?

  2. Great idea, hope you get lots of input and participation. Has the time been set yet?
I have put an article on my website directing people to your site. I also encourage interested voters to visit www.nanaimo-info-blog.com as I have separate pages devoted to the upcoming election including a list of 20 questions I have asked candidates. Their answers are helpful in deciding who to support.
Good work and I hope you generate lots of interest in what is arguably one of the most important elections Nanaimo has faced in many years.
